Episode Thirteen - Matt Bearden

Subscribe via iTunes

Episode Thirteen welcomes mustachioed comedian Matt Bearden on the show to discuss Austin comedy, no homo, Supercuts, and facial hair.

Here's what The Onion has to say about Matt:

Proving that one can be both self-loathing and cocky without creating some sort of personality paradox, Matt Bearden is one of those comedians whose best jokes are at the expense of himself—although he’s also so quick with a snarky aside that most of the audience is laughing before they realize they’ve just been insulted. Bearden thankfully eschews bits and shtick, preferring semiautobiographical stories delivered in a gripping, breathless patter and full of tossed-off, dry witticisms that lesser comics would build whole sets around. The fact that he never dumbs it down has made him a favorite among those who worship the smart, sarcastic humor of comics like Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins. --Dec, 2008

New Eugene Mirman!

One of my absolute favorite comedians, Eugene Mirman, released his new album, God is a Twelve Year Old Boy with Aspergers, this week, and it's completely hilarious. Buy it. Seriously.

And just because, here's a bonus track by John Wesley Harding that was originally supposed to close out the album.

Episode Seven welcomes comedian Anthony Cavazos and musician Eric Nauni (Student Film) to the show. I will be opening for Student Film at their album release party at VZD's in Oklahoma City on October 10th.

Workspaces!

Thanks in large part to my friend Tate James over at The Apache House, I've recently become quite interested in where people do their work. It combines a lot of different things I'm interested in, most notably tech and how people use it.

So with that in mind, here is how my workspace currently looks:

Notice the extreme nerdery. Instead of having a regular desk, I just use my coffee table and am always able to sit on my couch. The lap desk that my Macbook sits on makes this easy and comfortable. I do everything from basic internetting and email, social networking, and school work, to working on my stand up comedy and recording my weekly podcast CB Radio here. It should be appearing over at The Apache House in the near future as well.

If this kind of thing interests you, it's probably worth your time to head over to Lifehacker. They have some pretty awesome featured workspaces, including ones from celebrities, as well as really useful and interesting workspace tips.

Episode Six - Doug Benson & Graham Elwood

Subscribe Via iTunes

Episode six welcomes comedians Doug Benson (Super High Me, Best Week Ever) and Graham Elwood. The episode was recorded backstage at the McKinney Performing Arts Center in McKinney, TX before and during their show.

A few weeks ago, I drove up to Kansas City to record to an episode of CB Radio with the uber hilarious comedian Matt Braunger (MADtv, Comedy Central Records) at Stanford and Sons Comedy Club. I got to see two of his shows, then recorded what I thought was a really hilarious episode with Braunger and his feature that week, AJ Finney. Then, after leaving the club, I realize that the recording flat out didn't work, and I hadn't gotten any of it. I'm not exactly what happened, but I'm sure it boils down to me not having any idea what I'm doing when it comes to audio recording, which is also why the audio quality of CB Radio is often so terrible.

I'm still learning how this stuff works and am doing so by just doing it. So I suppose this blog post has two points a) Matt Braunger was an awesome guest that I hope to have on again soon and actually be able to release his hilarity and b) bear with me when it comes to audio quality. Hopefully what's being recorded is funny and interesting enough that it doesn't matter if it isn't actually level or the clearest of recording.
Episode five welcomes comedians Dan Skaggs & Kristin Rand to mostly just talk about vaginas. Recorded at the 51st St. Speakeasy in Oklahoma City.

Episode Four - Spencer Hicks & Shane Parks

Episode four welcomes Oklahoma City comedians Spencer Hicks and Shane Parks.

Episode Three - Leah Kayajanian & Derek Smith

Episode Three welcomes the 2009 Oklahoma City Funniest Person Leah Kayajanian and Chicago-bound Derek Smith of 796 Entertainment.

And don't forget to rate/review the show in iTunes. That sort of thing helps a lot.

Episode Two - Jimmy Pardo & Andrew Jeffrey Jakober

For episode two, we welcome comedian and podcasting vanguard Jimmy Pardo as well as Forgive Durden's Andrew Jeffrey Jakober. Recorded in Austin, Texas backstage at the Cap City Comedy Club.

OKC's Funniest Person - Leah Kayajanian

The Loony Bin Comedy Club's annual Oklahoma Comedy Competition is now over, and the winner is Leah Kayajanian. Leah killed it both nights, and clearly deserved her victory.

You can see Leah every week at Othello's in Norman, and frequently at the Loony Bin and 51st st. Speakeasy. Earlier this year, Leah also won the University of Oklahoma's Funniest Person award. If you are not familiar with her, do youself a favor and check her out.

Congrats also goes out the 2nd place finisher Brian Stephens and 3rd place Stan Silliman.

Even though I didn't make it out of the first round, I was very happy with my set, and the competition was still a lot of fun and provided invaluable inexperience. I look forward to competing again next year.

Episode One - BradChad Porter & Dan O'Donoghue

For the very first episode of CB Radio, we welcome 796 Entertainment's BradChad Porter and Dan O'Donoghue. The episode was recorded after their weekly Monday's Don't Suck comedy show at the 51st St. Speakeasy in Oklahoma City.

New podcast! CB Radio!

I am way way excited to be putting out my new podcast, CB Radio. I learned a lot doing ETS, and am confident in saying that the new show will be much better. Better guests, better conversations, better sound quality, and better ways to bring it to you.

The first episode goes up this Sunday, August 23rd. And just so you know, the "CB" in CB Radio stands for Cameron Buchholtz. Big thanks goes out to Tate Bradley James for the logo.

ETS Episode Eighteen - Derek Smith

OUR FINAL EPISODE!

Yup, this will be the very last episode of ETS, but I will be starting a new podcast, C.B. Radio, which promises to be much better in pretty much every way. More details to come!

This Wednesday, August 19th I'm taking part in the Loony Bin Comedy Club's annual Oklahoma Comedy Competition. This is only the second comedy competition I've taken part in, and the first that could actually mean something. My doing well in this competition would get me closer to getting booked as emcee for a week the Loony Bin (which is the next comedy hurdle I need to jump). Twenty comedians will compete Wednesday night, with the top eight moving on to the finals on Sunday, August 23rd. I know I have a very slim chance of winning, so my real goal for the competition is just to move on to Sunday night. I'm quite excited about it.

Semifinals - Wednesday, August 19th
Finals - Sunday, August 23rd

8 p.m. 21 +

Vote for my friends!

The Oklahoma Gazette
is currently running their annual Best of OKC Awards, and a few of my friends were lucky enough (and deserving enough) to be nominated. The dudes at 796 Entertainment were nominated three times: Monday's Don't Suck at the Speakeasy (where I frequently perform) for Best Cheap Entertainment, 796entertainment.com for Best Blog, and Spencer Hicks for Best Visual Artist (despite not being a visual artist). Vote for those dudes. My friends with Dance Robots Dance also got nominated for their blog RobotDanceMusic.

Just go to okgazette.com and fill out at least half of the 52 categories by picking one of the five nominations in each category.

ETS Episode Fourteen - Leah Kayajanian

Another episode I should have put up a while ago, it's the much talked about Leah Kayajanian.

For some reason this one got cut off at about the halfway point, but it's probably for the best. I can't imagine anyone watching past the four minute mark anyway.

MDS Vlog Number Four from Cameron Buchholtz on Vimeo.

No, sadly not mine. But in the last week two really fantastic albums have been released by two incredibly hilarious comedians.

The first is Todd Glass's Thin Pig.

You should download it, because you definitely don't want to get on Todd Glass' bad side:

The second is Soak Up The Night by Matt Braunger.

Both of these comedians are hugely influential to me, and I can't recommend these albums enough. Both are digital releases by Comedy Central Records, and Braunger's album will also be available on vinyl.
I’m so lazy, this should have been put up weeks ago.

Oh well, BradChad is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, and hopefully that comes across in this episode.

Mondays Don't Suck Vlog Number Two

Last week after 796 Entertainment's awesome weekly comedy show Mondays Don't Suck, I sat down with Dan O'Donoghue, BradChad Porter, and James Nghiem to drunkenly discuss the show and other random stuff, all thirteen year old girl bedroom vlog style.

So I have been doing a REALLY terrible job updating this the past few weeks. I could make some sort of excuse, but reality is that I'm just lazy. I've still been performing a few times a week and have written a ton recently. I'm really happy with not only the amount of new material I've been writing, but also the quality of it. It's really exciting that I can actually feel myself improving at this whole stand up thing. This coupled with the awesome shows I'm going to be taking part in the next week or so has me on a bit of a comedy high.

Upcoming Shows:
6/22 - Othello's, Norman OK
6/27 - Suzy's Loung, Ardmore OK
6/29 - 51st St. Speakeasy, OKC OK (My first headlining set!)
6/30 - Othello's, Norman OK
7/1 - Loony Bin Comedy Club, OKC OK

Also, here's a video of my set at the Opolis Comedy Night from a few weeks ago. I'm already a bit embarrassed about it, but whatever.
OPOLIS 5/29/09

Here's to hoping I'll be better at keeping this thing updated. A new teenage girl style vlog with the 796 Entertainment guys and the return of the Escalator Temporarily Stairs podcast will be up shortly.

Promo Shots by Alex Thomas

Last week my friend and photographer Alex Thomas was nice enough to take some photos of me. I pretty much needed some decent pictures of me to help promote myself, send to bookers, and incorporate into the EPK that I desperately need to make. I figured I'd share some of the more choice shots.

My good friend Jacob Abello will performing for the first time this Saturday night at the Opolis. He'll be playing tracks from his new album Nothing But Gold. I really wish I wasn't out of town so I could go to this. Jacob has been working on his record for quite a long time, and I've anxiously awaited his live debut for most of it. But everyone reading this definitely shouldn't be like me, instead they should attend the show. The lineup is completely solid and will be well worth the $7.

You can listen to a few tracks from Nothing But Gold on Jacob's Myspace page or check out the KGOU review of the album HERE.

Tour! (kinda, sorta, not really)

I'll be doing some traveling in the next few weeks and performing in some places I've never been before. I'm super excited about it.

My May shows:
5/12 - Norman OK @ Othello's
5/13 - Little Rock AR @ Loony Bin Comedy Club
5/18 - Birmingham, AL @ The Barking Kudo
5/20 - Atlanta GA @ The Laughing Skull Lounge
5/25 - Birmingham AL @ The Barking Kudo
5/26 - Norman OK @ Othello's
5/27 - Oklahoma City OK @ Loony Bin Comedy Club
5/29 - Norman OK @ Opolis

I hope to have a larger scale US tour later in the summer.

Spoiler Free!

I was extremely skeptical going in to the new Star Trek film. I loved a lot of the original films and simply didn't think a) a reboot was necessary and b) that JJ Abrams was the right person at the helm. The old films still stand up, and I felt that any new incarnation would only tarnish the series (I'm looking at you Star Wars). And I've never liked anything J.J. Abrams has done (in fact, I despise most of it). Lost and Alias both seemed silly to me, MI3 was the absolute worst of the Mission Impossible series (and had the lamest villain death I can think of from any film), and Cloverfield was one of the most shallow, mindless, and flat-out boring films I saw last year. My reluctance continued after seeing the new film's trailers, which made the film out to be a mindless CGI-fest set to betray everything I love about the franchise.

But I am happy to report that absolutely loved Star Trek. Right from the very beginning it took me back to when I was little and would endlessly rewatch my dad's VHS box set of the first six films. I never onced questioned Pine and Quinto as Kirk and Spock, and the time travel storyline was the perfect way to restart the franchise without abandoning everything the previous films and television had setup. I had assumed that having Leonard Nimoy in the film was simply a desperate attempt to please fanboys, but (while it still may have been that), he was worked in perfectly.

That's not to say the entire film was perfect. The action sequences were lame, a bit too over-the-top, over-long, and far too reliant on computer effects (but that's just as much a complaint about modern action films as it is about this specific movie). The cast also didn't entirely work, I never fully bought Saldana and Urban as Uhura and Bones, and was constantly comparing them to the originals. Eric Bana was also a bit underused and under developed, and never once felt like a real threat. But these minor quibbles did little to prevent my enjoyment of the overall picture.

I went into the theater tonight expecting to hate the film, but came out completely loving it. I would be shocked if any other big summer blockbuster bests it.

8/10

I made The Lost Ogle.

I really shouldn't be all that excited about having my picture on a local blog, but for some reason I am. I read The Lost Ogle pretty much every day (despite disagreeing with them a good chunk of the time) and think their whole Cardboard Jim Traber series is pretty hilarious.
"Cardboard Jim told these yardbirds what it’s like to be a big time radio star. Cardboard Cornett told them about Bob Cortese. The guy on the right starred in Rushmore and is in the band Coconut Records."

The picture was taken while I was being interview by The Wire. And I suppose I should somewhat flattered by the Jason Schwartzman comparison (even though it's one I hear fairly often).

My good friend and fellow comedian Derek Smith (of 796 Entertainment) also made the NMF Cardboard Jim piece, which is notable not just because his picture is awesome, but because The Lost Ogle recently bashed Derek's podcast.
"This guy kept demanding that we give him Brent Skarky’s phone number. We told him that Regular Jim Traber knows Brent Skarky. This satisfied the guy."
